|  Rare picture of James Butler (Wild Bill) Hickok. After a shave and a haircut. It is possible that this picture was taken in La Salle, Kansas around 1859. Hello my friends. | 7th Cavalry Troopers "Shot by Wild Bill Hickok" in Hay's City, Kansas Hickok was chosen sheriff by special election of Ellis County, Kansas in 1869; Hays City had just been founded and was the largest town in the county, serving the nearby military post of Fort Hays. After serving the town efficiently -- but apparently visciously -- he was defeated for re-election in 1869. Still in Hays in July of 1870, Hickok got into a dispute with two members of the 7th cavalry from nearby Fort Hays, killing one and wounding another.  Souvenir Program from The Trial of Jack McCall. c1800  Cabinet Card of James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok (1837-1876) with imprint of George Rockwood, one of New York's premier photographers. Likely taken in 1873 or 74 when he was in the city as part of Cody's first theatrical performance.  | |
