This is the recipe I have used for over 30 years and I like it. It is a somewhat heavy bread
and it will stick with you. This recipe dates back to the 1850's.
Pioneer Bread
2 1/4 cups of flour
1 cup of warm water
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of baking soda
Mix all ingredients in a bowl until sticky and
bake on a greased pan for 20 minutes at
350 degrees or until top is browned.
This can also be made on the trail in a dutch oven.
It can be cooked on a rock or even in the ashes.
The bread can be in any shape, but pat it down so it
is only an inch or an inch and a half thick prior to baking.
